Students plan rally to mark Anti-Corruption Day

In a move to encourage Thais to "Refuse to be Corrupt", the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Thai Youth Anti-Corruption Network will be holding a rally outside the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) on Sunday to mark International Anti-Corruption Day.

More than 1,500 students from universities across Thailand will gather at the venue at 3pm.

A recent Abac poll showed that up to 63.4 per cent of Thai people believe that a corrupt government is acceptable provided they benefit from it.

"We're taking a pledge to refuse to be corrupt and are calling on the public to take a stand with us on Sunday," Sayuti Salam, president of the Thai Youth Anti-Corruption Network and a student at Hat Yai's Prince of Songkhla University, said. "If we are going to fight corruption in Thailand, we have to start with ourselves first."

Some 600 students from the South are expected to join the rally, along with 800 from the Northeast and another 300 from Bangkok and other parts of Thailand.

The UNDP, in partnership with Khon Kaen University's College of Local Administration, has engaged more than 2,500 students from up to 90 universities across the country since June to create the student-led anti-corruption network.

The Sunday rally marks the public launch of the newly formed Thai Youth Anti-Corruption Network, following the opening of a special exhibition sponsored by the UNDP and the National Anti-Corruption Commission. The exhibition, put together by 23 universities, will kick off with a special preview held from 10am to noon, when students will be at hand to discuss their work and voice their concerns about corruption in Thai society.
