Schaefer praised for tactics

Former national coach Chanwit Pholcheewin praised current manager Winfried Schaefer after his team hit back to secure a valuable draw away to title-holders Malaysia in the first leg of the Asean Championship semi-final.

A goal down at the packed Bukit Jalil Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, the 62-year-old Schaefer changed the formation just after half-time, strengthening the attack with two men up front. It proved a shrewd move, with Muang Thong striker Teerasil Dangda going on to score a potentially crucial away goal in the closing stages.

Ex-coach Chanwit, who was in charge of the Thai side that lost 3-2 on aggregate to Singapore in the 2007 final, praised the German for throwing on striker Kirati Kiewsombat to reinforce an attack that had been spearheaded by Teerasil alone.

"I appreciated the effort the Thai players put in against Malaysia in front of a large crowd. They stayed focused on the game and didn't allow themselves to get distracted by the home support. It was a tough game, with the Malaysians putting us under severe pressure at times. "We eventually conceded a goal, which forced us to get forward in search of an equaliser. Our play down both flanks wasn't working. Schaefer deserves credit for introducing Kirati, which opened up more space for Teerasil.

"The move helped deliver the only chance we got, which led to our goal after Piyaphon Buntao surged forward to deliver a cross for Teerasil to head home. It could be a precious goal for us, and it certainly eases the pressure," said Chanwit.

Three-time champions Thailand, whose last triumph came a decade ago, will host Malaysia on Thursday for a spot in the final against either Philippines or Singapore.
