Nobel Prize award doesn't make sense

Written By Unknown on Wednesday, 12 December 2012 | 04:41

There's nothing wrong with EU Ambassador David Lipman singing the praises of the European Union. That's part of his job, but this year's decision to award the Nobel Peace Prize to the EU strikes me as a cop-out. Presumably they just couldn't think who else to give it to.

The award has a reputation for being controversial, and if, as Mr Lipman says, this prize is for "all the EU's citizens", then I suspect many will feel distinctly uncomfortable at finding themselves bracketed together with some of the less salubrious recipients of previous years.

At least the peace prize committee in Oslo can't be accused of favouring the "home" side. Their country has not seen fit to join the EU.
