House anti-graft panel asked to probe police station building project

Pheu Thai Party spokesman Prompong Nopparit asked the House anti-graft panel on Thursday to investigate the Bt5.85bn police station construction project, which is running behind schedule.

Pheu Thai MP Viroj Paoin, chairman of the House committee against corruption and malfeasance, accepted Prompong's complaint.

The Abhisit Vejjajiva government approved the project to build 396 police stations nationwide to replace old ones.

The National Police awarded the construction contract on March 26, 2011 to PCC Development and Construction to complete work by June 17, 2012. The contract had to be amended to extend the completion date to January 13, 2013.

Prompong said the contractor appeared to have abandoned the project.

Some police stations were demolished but their replacements have not yet been built, so police had to borrow offices from local government agencies or work in modified cargo containers, he said.
