It's the end of the world as we know it, next Friday apparently. Not again, you might say. If we have one last week to enjoy ourselves, here's how.
LIVE DJ SET
Start the party tonight (Dec 14) with some live and rampant dubstep courtesy of Knife Party. One for the ADD generation, their soaring popularity can't be denied. So go see for yourself what the big hype about the lads from Oz is about. It's on at Sonic (90 Sukhumvit Soi 63, 02-382-3395). Tickets are B1,500, which will sort the fans from the flakes.
POP-UP DINNER
Also, tonight (Dec 14) is the beginning of all-weekend-event Santa on a Surfboard, combining Christmas with Flow House (A Square, Sukhumvit Soi 26, 02-108-5210). What could go wrong? Tonight and tomorrow night (Dec 15) will see a five-course traditional Hawaiian feast courtesy of Eat Me restaurant's Tim Butler, free-flow craft beer, and a sesh on the wave (hopefully before dinner). Dinner is at 7pm. Tickets are B2,700. To purchase, contact 02-108-0387, or sip@seekbeervana.com.
PARTY
Now she is six. Showing her age, Lady Soma will throw down her sixth birthday party for Club Soma on Sat (Dec 15) under the theme of "Time Machine". Plot will play live, and man about town Tul from Apartment Khunpa will DJ, among others. It's on at Play Yard by Studio Bar (Lat Phrao Soi 8), which is yet unsighted but an exciting prospect - props to new venues. Entry is B200 with a drink.
BOAT PARTY
To escape the madness of the city, try I'm too Sexy on the Boat party on Sat (Dec 15). The plan is to eat a buffet dinner at Phish Cafe (Ban Phe, Rayong, www.phishcafe.com) before boarding the boat and cruising over to Koh Samet and surrounds for the evening. Onboard, drinks will flow alongside DJs and dancers. The concept is good. Let's see if people are willing to travel for it. Tickets are B1,200.
DJ
House pioneer Frankie Knuckles is back through the city on Thu (Dec 20) at Bed (26 Sukhumvit Soi 11). Go pay your respects to one of the starters of the whole house music thing. Gate Crasher got his ear before the show:
WHAT KEEPS YOU INTERESTED IN TOURING AFTER SO LONG?
I always have something "musical" to say. I'm very fortunate to have people around the world to believe and support the music I make and play. So, with every project it's not enough to just have other DJs playing it. Me coming to play it for everyone makes it all a little more personal.
FIVE WORDS TO DESCRIBE THOSE EARLY PARTIES AT THE FAMOUS WAREHOUSE CLUB IN THE 1970s/80s...
Fabulous, fun, spiritual, church, emotional.
WHY HAS HOUSE MUSIC LASTED SO LONG? IS IT ETERNAL?
Apart from the obvious electronic ingredients, there's an organic element that the songs and performers bring to it that just brings it all together. Eternal? I think so. As long as we have homegrown natural talent coming out of our churches and young people who have to make themselves heard in this arena, if rock is here to stay, so is house music.
IS IT TOO EASY TO MAKE ELECTRONIC MUSIC DIGITALLY THESE DAYS?
Maybe. But it's not easy to make "good" electronic music.
WHO DO YOU LIKE TO HEAR DJ?
Danny Krivit (718 Sessions/Body Soul), David Morales (of course), The Shapeshifters, David Harness (San Francisco), Derrick Carter (Chicago).
TOP 5 TRACKS AT THE MOMENT:
1. "Secret Life Of Us" (Director's Cut Signature Mix) - Joey Negro The Sunburst Band
2. "Back To Basics" (Director's Cut Signature) - The Shapeshifters
3. "The Whistle Song" (Supernova Remix) - Director's Cut
4. "Let Me Live Again" (Director's Cut Mix) - Colton Ford
5. "Right Now" (Director's Cut Signature Mix) - Inaya Day Robin S.
FAVOURITE CLUB IN THE WORLD?
Any club that caters to the DJ and his craft is a favorite.
WHAT CAN YOUR BANGKOK FANS EXPECT FOR THE SHOW?
Lots of fun in an evening fuelled with classic house music. I love the clubbers in Bangkok. It's always so much fun here!
