Economic growth has created a Chinese middle class with disposable income and an ever-growing appetite for luxury goods and overseas traveling.
In 2011 Chinese took a total of 70 million overseas trips. The UNWTO (World Tourism Organization) is predicting that this number will jump to 80 million this year and will reach the 100 million mark by the end of the decade. Only 15 years ago, Chinese tourists took 5 million overseas trips per year. The total spent abroad has increased from $54 billion in 2010 to $72 billion in 2011.
According to an announcement made last week by Jonathan Newhouse, Chairman and Chief executive of Condé Nast International, the group will partner with Women of China Media, a Chinese press agency, to publish the magazine.
Condé Nast Traveler will be the sixth title to be published in the country by Condé Nast International. The other titles are Vogue, Self, GQ, AD and Modern Bride.
In August 2012, Condé Nast France launched a semi-annual style magazine in Mandarin under the name Vogue Travel in France. The publication, which covers fashion, beauty, interior decoration, gastronomy and design from a French perspective, aims to reach an audience of Chinese tourists in France.
