It's the time of year to wipe the slate clean again and declare one's good intentions. 'Brunch' spoke to four celebrities about their aspirations for 2013, and the answers ranged from lofty goals of self-improvement to a desire to slow down and take a deep breath.

GENE KASIDIT
Associate professor, Faculty of Communication Arts, Chulalongkorn University.
'New Year's Resolution: Be a loser! The past few years of my life have been a constant juggle between family and work. Trying to strike a balance between both is quite impossible most of the time. Yet I have tried, quite pathetically, to be an overachieving career mother. The result, as could be expected, is taking a toll on my health, my work, my kids and my relationships, especially with my loved ones.
''So for the upcoming New Year, I am setting a personal goal to reform myself by being more of a loser.
''I'm partly inspired by that reality show The Biggest Loser, in which contestants attempting to lose the most weight fight for a cash prize. My aim, however, is not to lose weight (as I have given up on that almost entirely) but to lose myself of 'busy-ness', 'driven-ness' and, of course, madness. So, next year I will say 'no' more to people, and will not look as hard for the next thing or scheme for the future. This is so that I will not end up mad and sorry in what Socrates describes as 'the barrenness of a busy life'.
''By losing out on these grounds, I may find the personal resources to give more and take less from people, particularly those who mean something to me in my life. When I'm too busy, driven and mad, I'm likely to be rude, demanding and inconsiderate.
''By allowing myself to be more of a loser, I may become a better and more caring person. So, come 2013, please welcome another loser!''
BOONTHAM PHAKPHO
Iron Chef Thailand star and restaurant owner.
'Next year we will increase the number of branches, both Honmono itself and Honmono sushi bar [my restaurants]. We'll open one in April at City Viva Sathon and at CentralWorld around the end of the year. I also want to start a new business for my wife. In Japan there are '100 shops' right? I'm going to do the same here in Thailand. You walk in with 30 baht and you can buy anything.
I'll take care of myself, my health especially. If I can still enjoy eating, I'll eat. And I'll try to find more time for myself and my family because since the restaurant opened, all I've been doing is working. I want to have some time to enjoy the money I'm making.''
NITSARA KAROONUTHAISIRI
Scientist.
'Time flies! Can you believe that ... we will [soon] be saying goodbye to 2012, the year of the golden dragon, and welcoming in the year of the snake? With that thought in mind, I start to reflect upon the last year. Amid a prestigious and demanding Marie Curie Fellowship in the UK and many ongoing research projects in Thailand, I got married to a wonderful man, had my debut as a newspaper columnist and became a brand ambassador for a campaign to encourage people to 'push their limits' in life; all while managing to stay sane. Now, haunted by my own personal motto, can I 'push my limits' any more in the next year? Certainly! I have always been a big believer in self-determination _ after all, if you don't believe in yourself, who will? This year, I promise myself I will push my limits by 'walking the talk'. For the past several months, when I have been interviewed, the final question from the interviewer has almost always been: 'What more do you want to do in your life?' My answer has always been 'To pass on opportunities, experience and wisdom to the younger generation.' Vague as it may sound, this year my plan to 'walk the talk' will be solidified. Though realising all too well that it would take many more new year's resolutions to follow through on my grand scheme, I have to start somewhere, and 2013 will be the year. After all, if I don't start today, before I know it, another year will pass.
KATRIN FELTON
Professional model, Miss Germany International 2006 and environmentalist.
'For the New Year, I've been thinking about how I can get people to think about the environment and to be greener. As of 01/01/13 there will be a monthly photo contest on my Facebook page (www.facebook.com/MermaidKat) concerning environmental issues and animal welfare. The photo with the most 'likes' wins a Mermaid Kat product. The first contest will be about clean-ups. Anyone wishing to participate should go into the wild _ beach, forest, etc _ and clean up rubbish. Then take a picture with it, send it to me and I'll publish it on my page.''
