Buddhist teachers should be removed : CSC

Thai-Buddhist teachers in three districts of Narathiwat on Tuesday refused to work following reports that insurgents are now targeting the Buddhist teachers.

An informed source said four Buddhist teachers at four schools in Chanae, Rangae and Joh I Rong districts, instead reported to the central authority in the province. The schools there opened as usual.

Meanwhile Prasit Meksuwan, president of the Civil Society Council of the Southernmost Thailand called for the removal of Buddhist teachers from the risky to safer areas immediately and for security personnel to be with educational personnel throughout the day and if possible, around the clock.

The removal of Buddhist teachers was felt to be required immediately in light of the brutal killings of one school director and a teacher, both Buddhists, in Pattani's Nong Chik district on Tuesday.

Several men in camouflage gear and armed with rifles entered Baan Bangor School as a group of teachers were having lunch. The insurgents reportedly ordered them to kneel down in the Yawi dialect apparently to distinguish Buddhist from Muslim teachers. They shot Tatiyarat Chuaykaew, director and Somsak Kwanma from behind, after they failed to follow the orders.

Prasit said the insurgents in military gear exploited the teachers' trust in the troopers.

Prasit said the deaths of four teachers in 20 days were unacceptable and the worst loss in eight years. "The tragedy occurred even though it was promised that security would be stepped up and education personnel would be under closer watch of the security authorities.
