Striker Teerasil Dangda grabbed a hat-trick to inspire Thailand to a convincing 4-0 victory over Myanmar, which ensured them a spot in the semifinals of the Asean Championship yesterday.
After topping Group A with three points from a 2-1 win over the Philippines in their first match, the three-time champions Thailand were only one victory away from clinching a berth in the last four of the event, having suffered a premature exit two years ago.
The Thai side, whose last victory in the biennial tournament came in 2002, managed to achieve the desired result after Muang Thong United hitman Teerasil put the Burmese to the sword with his lethal finishing to take his tally to four goals in the competition co-hosted by Thailand and Malaysia.
The Thais face Vietnam, who went down to a shock 1-0 loss against the Philippines, in their final group match on Friday.
