Public backs debate: poll

Written By Unknown on Sunday, 4 November 2012 | 06:14

Over 50 per cent of respondents to a Suan Dusit Poll survey said they believed it was time the government faced a censure debate. Some 50.2 per cent of respondents backed a debate in Parliament on the rice-pledging scheme and the government's flood-management policies.

The poll was conducted on 1,242 people between October 29 and Friday. A majority of respondents said a censure debate would allow the opposition to scrutinise the work of the government and that the time was right to check on whether any corruption had occurred. The government, respondents said, would also be able to clarify its policies to the public.

Slightly more than 25 per cent of respondents believed the timing was not right for a censure debate, however, due to the ongoing political conflict. Over 24 per cent said they were not sure if the time was right, due to the recent Cabinet reshuffle.

Other issues that respondents wanted to see included in the censure debate are livelihood development, the high cost of living, the general economic performance of the Yingluck Shinawatra administration and scrutiny of the work of politicians.

Some 66 per cent of those who supported the censure debate said the premier and various ministers should be targeted separately. Only 11 per cent said the prime minister should be targeted and have to answer questions herself.
