Hong Kong and hiking make for unlikely bed mates until you've signed up for a free-guided Sunday hike.
Part of the Great Outdoors Hong Kong campaign, the hiking programme offers free guided tours along five thematic trails for visitors on five consecutive Sundays until 9 December. The tramp starts from the Peak to Pok Fu Lam Reservoir and has a quota of 100 for each tour. Interested visitors should sign up at an HKTB Visitor Centre at least two days before a tour takes place.
No peace on the plane
Seems like Asians really do enjoy chatting! More than 50 per cent of Asian air travellers are in favour of using mobile phones on board planes, according to the latest survey by Skyscanner. The survey of more 10,000 travellers across Asia Pacific found that 51 per cent of travellers were fine with the move to allow passengers to make calls on a flight. Asian travelers welcomed the introduction of mobile phones on planes as opposed to those from Europe. Skyscanner conducted the survey as a response to an Emirates announcement that it would provide mobile phones on board flights. - The Jakarta Post/ANN
Facelift for Taiwanese capital's airport
Taipei International Airport will get upgraded following the recent approval of a US$34 million budget. The project aims to create an "airport city" where travellers can work, rest and play within its boundaries. With the expansion of business and shopping centres outside the air travel hub, the government hopes to revitalise the areas near and inside the airport, creating a "business commercial corridor" including hotels, conference halls and convention buildings that run along the outer bounds of the airport. - ANN
Pompei's haunting garden reopens
The Garden of the Fugitives, a famed archaeological site at Pompei in Italy, has reopened to the public after being closed for restoration work. The site south of Naples contains the plaster casts of 13 of Pompei's residents who had tried to flee the deadly eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Trapped in the lava, their bodies eventually decayed and left hollow spaces in the hardened volcanic ash - later filled with plaster to make haunting white statues of the victims. Works at the site include the construction of a visitor centre that tells the story of how the victims perished. - AFP
Weekending in Da Nang
Hong Kong-based carrier Cathay Pacific has asked Da Nang City to allow its passengers to be granted visas on arrival at the local airport. Senior officials of the carrier said their proposal aims to attract Hong Kong travellers to the central coastal city at weekends. Since the travel time from Hong Kong to Da Nang is not long, Hong Kong travel agencies want their customers to be given visas at Da Nang Airport. This would enable their clients to fly to Da Nang as soon as they finish work on Friday. Hong Kong visitors find it bothersome to spend time applying for visas for short holidays in Viet Nam. - Viet Nam News/ANN
