Here, there and everywhere

Not from many places in the world is it possible to reach Tuscany, Kensington, France and The Middle Ages in just two hours. But from Bangkok it is. Sort of.

Thanks to the imagination of Khao Yai developers, residents of Bangkok have an array of themed residences and mixed-used developments within just a couple of hours' drive.

Palio Khao Yai is an Italian style shopping complex in Khao Yai national park. Managing to incorporate various American fast food chains such as McDonald and Baskin Robbins, as well as the odd local Thai restaurant, it's truly something. Its residential component, The Eyrie, is located not far away and features 60 individually shaped units in two, three and four floor configurations. Starting at THB9 million (US$293,272) for the smallest unit, the development has been extremely popular with Bangkok residents, says the architect. Bangkokians who like Chiang Mai for its hilly surroundings and cooler winter temperatures are increasingly opening their eyes to Khao Yai given its proximity to Bangkok, he says. The development is only accessible to owners therefore avoiding armies of camera-wielding tourists dominating the picture at Palio.

Ten minutes drive from The Eyrie will take visitors to Kensington. Or Kensington English Garden Resort Khao Yai to be precise. Not as authentic as The Eyrie, the resort nevertheless does a good job in the garden part, complete with English roses and a quaint little pond in the back. It even started raining while we were there.

If Italy and England isn't your thing, Khao Yai also has French styled houses. Magnolia Quality Development Corporation Ltd is developing the Magnolia French Country Project, a collection of France countryside-inspired residences.

Finally, the Smoke House Khao Yai restaurant is located in an eerie looking gothic-inspired structure complete with a watch tower to the right.

With developments like these just a short drive away, who needs real travelling?
