The Bangkok Voices, a choral group from Thailand, made a successful showing at a recent choral competition.

The group represented Thailand at the first Xinghai Prize International Choir Championships, which ends today in Guangzhou, China. The event was organised by the CPC Guangzhou Municipal Government, China Choral Association and Interkultur (Germany).

The competition was divided into 11 categories with 164 choirs from 43 countries. More than 7,000 choristers participated in the event.

The Bangkok Voices took part in two categories, Mixed Chamber Choirs and Pop/Jazz/Gospel and were awarded gold certificates in both. They also took home the "Category Winner Award" for achieving the highest score in the Mixed Chamber Choirs category.

They were then selected to compete for the Xinghai cash prize in the Pop/Jazz/Gospel category and received the Platinum Award, ranking fourth out of 10 contestants.

The Bangkok Voices, under the direction of Dr Kittiporn Tantrarungroj, is an a cappella choir of 26 members established in 2005. Their previous successes include winning a gold medal at the 2007 Asian Choir Games, held in Jakarta, and bagging two golds at the 2009 Pattaya Grand Prix.

Widely seen as a prototype for many local choirs in the provinces, they have been very active giving local concerts and as well as promoting choral music in Thailand.

Their participation in the competition was supported by the Thailand Choral Association, the Department of Cultural Promotion, the Ministry of Culture and Thai AirAsia.
