BANGKOK, 2 May 2013 (NNT) â" The Ministry of Public Health is working to set up clinics for occupational illnesses as a gift to the public on the occasion of Thai Labor Day, after finding that several groups of workers have been afflicted by such illnesses.
Minister of Public Health Pradit Sintawanarong said his ministry has a policy to prevent and reduce illnesses resulting from occupations, and thus has set up occupational illness clinics at 81 large hospitals. These clinics are staffed by specialist doctors.
Dr. Pradit indicates that most sufferers of occupational illness in the countryside were those in the agriculture sector. Thus, at least one clinic for farmers' health will be set up in every province. These clinics will work to prevent general diseases and also determine the risk each patient faces from the use of chemicals in agriculture.
In Thailand, the top 5 categories of occupational illness comprise musculoskeletal illness, exposure to poisons from animals, skin diseases, plant toxins and lungs respiratory tract illness.
