Egat forced to delay electricity supply to deep South

A plan to acquire additional electricity from Malaysia to cope with a shortage in the deep South may have to be delayed until next year due to continuing violence in the region, a senior official at the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) said Thursday

The 1320-kilovolt supply will be delivered to a power station in Narathiwat's Sungai-Kolok district, in addition to another supply purchased from Malaysia, which is currently being delivered to a power station in the Sadao district of Songkhla, said Worraphoj In-thong.

Another supply is also planned from Narathiwat to Sungai-Kolok, which could help with the shortage in both areas. However, plans for this and other projects may have to be delayed until 2015, because contractors rarely showed an interest in bidding for them during the violence, said Worraphoj.

Thirteen sets of mobile generators owned by Egat have been assigned to help with power generating at 13 locations in Pattani and Narathiwat.

Energy Minister Pongsak Ruktapongpisal said he and a team of delegates would visit the deep South next month to hear about the local communities' feedback to a planned construction of a coal-fired electricity generating plant in Krabi.
