Security officials in Deep South step up security to deter incidents on Krue Se’s 9th anniversary

BANGKOK, 26 April 2013 (NNT) â€" Military and police forces in the Deep South are on stringent watch against insurgents who have allegedly entered the southern border provinces in preparation to strike.

Officials said Intelligence has warned of the attempt to create unrest on the 9th anniversary of the Krue Se Mosque incident on April 28.


In the meantime, Army Commander-in-Chief Prayuth Chan-ocha expressed his view that significance should not be given to the anniversary of the Krue Se event, because this would benefit the insurgents’ intention of reinforcing the event.


At the same time, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra expressed her concerns over the southern border situation, and urged all parties to help solve the problem via peaceful means.


National Security Council Secretary-General Paradon Phatthanathabut asserted that talks between Thailand’s representatives and the BRN separatist group would take place on April 29 as scheduled. The talks would emphasize on curbing the number of violent incidents in the Deep South. He also indicated that the Thai negotiators would welcome other separatist groups who wished to join in the talks.
