Dhaka - More than 200 people were alive trapped under the rubble of an eight-storey building that collapsed near the Bangladeshi capital this week, a government minister said Friday.
Rescuers freed 54 people alive from the debris overnight, said Jahangir Kabir Nanak, junior minister for local government, rural development and cooperatives, who was speaking on the Independent Television channel.
The crew was trying to recover the other trapped survivors from the Rana Plaza building, which collapsed on Wednesday in Savar, around 25 kilometres north-west of Dhaka.
Emergency teams have been trying to supply food and water through gaps in the rubble.
At least 275 people were confirmed killed since the building'seight storeys, and a ninth under construction, collapsed, crushing a bank, shops, and several storeys of garment factories.//DPA
