Luksika Kumkhum survived a strong challenge from Austrian Melanie Klaffner before advancing to the final round of the US$25,000 Chang-SAT ITF Pro Circuit at the Thanyapura Sports and Leisure Club in Phuket yesterday.

Luksika had to receive on-court treatment for her right thigh during the final set when she was 0-2 behind before regaining her momentum to outlast her opponent 6-2 6-7 (3-7) 7-5 in the semi-finals. She will play for her first title of the year in today's final against Lisa Whybourne of Britain who also needed three sets to beat Peangtarn Plipuech 6-3 2-6 7-6 (7-3).

"I fought from 2-4 to lead 6-5 in the second set but I just couldn't finish the match. She played well when she was behind and hit like she had nothing to lose and it worked for her. She was serving really well, she blasted a lot of aces," said the 19-year-old Luksika from Chanthaburi.

"Then I felt a bit stiff on my right thigh at the beginning of the set. After the treatment I felt a bit better and tried to keep the ball in play. She started missing. It was a relief to pull it through and be in the final," said the world No 133, looking for her first title in nine months since winning a US$25,000 event in Kazakhstan last year.

"It's been a while since I won a tournament. But my next opponent is tough as she hits big and is quite consistent. But I'm also playing well and I like to play my best game with her," Luksika said.

In the women's doubles finals, Nicha Lertpitaksinchai and Peangtarn Plipuech beat Tara Moore and Melanie South of Great Britain 6-3 5-7 11-9 for the title.
