BANGKOK, 25 April 2013 (NNT) รข€" The government is getting ready to give away tens of thousands of large water containers to drought-prone areas across the country.

Deputy Prime Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi in his capacity as the chair of the Water and Flood Management Commission (WFMC), on Thursday, attended the demonstration of the sturdiness of the 2,000-liter plastic containers, which will be distributed to various parts of Thailand.

The large water container scheme is part of the government measures to help residents, who are at risk of drought, get by the dry spell.

In the demonstration, Mr. Plodprasop smacked one of the containers with hammer to show how durable they can be.

The Deputy PM said tha such containers are needed in drought-prone areas and that better technology has enabled the government to save and switch from more costly fiberglass receptacles to economical plastic.

He added that the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation will be in charge of the procurement of 20,000 containers, under the budget of 300 million baht, for distribution in 15 provinces, where more than 50 percent of the area have been hit by drought.
