Thailand have appealed against the Asian Football Confederation's ruling that Buriram United midfielder Charyl Chappuis could not play in Friday's Asia Cup qualifier away to Lebanon as he had already appeared for Switzerland's youth team.
AFC rules state that a player cannot play in the Asian Cup qualifiers if he has previously represented another national team in a Fifasanctioned tournament. Chappuis once played for Switzerland in the under17 World Cup, which means that the player, born to a Thai mother, is ineligible for Thailand's second group match against thirdplaced Lebanon.
However, the Thai Football Association (FAT) is hopeful of a successful appeal against the ruling with Fifa, which would mean it could call on the services of the ThaiSwiss player for the remaining Group A fixtures.
"It's certain that he [Chappuis] won't be able to play against Lebanon. But, we're hoping that he would be eligible to play for us in our last four games in the group.
"We have sent all the documentary evidence about Chappuis to Fifa. We're optimistic that Fifa will rule in our favour. If we receive clearance from Fifa, there is a possibility that we could see [Chappius] in national colours in our home match against Iran in October," said Ongart Kohsinkha, general secretary of the FAT.
After losing 31 in the group's opening match at home to Kuwait last month, Thailand need a result from the Lebanon trip if they are to secure one of the two qualification spots in the section.
