PETROCHEMICALS
PTT Plc, the national oil conglomerate, is spending 1.3 billion baht to develop Thailand's first zero-wastewater industrial estate for bio-petrochemicals and biofuels, with operations expected to start in 2015.
Nattachart Charuchinda, chief executive of operations for the downstream petroleum group, said the project is located on 1,500 rai near the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate.
The project will use a 100% wastewater recycling system and designate 80% of space for manufacturing, 15% for a green area and 5% for a back-up office and research and development facilities.
Recent construction is expected to serve the group's future projects such as biodegradable plastic made from lactic acid and succinate acid.
It also plans to develop bio-hydrofined diesel production there.
Last year, PTT announced a 3-billion-baht venture with Japan's Mitsubishi Chemical Corporations and established PTTMCC Biochem Co, which will produce poly butylene succinate of 20,000 tonnes a year at this estate.
NatureWorks LLC, the world's largest polylactic acid producer, in which PTT Global Chemical acquired a 50% stake last year, is also considering a production plant in Asia but has not selected a location.
PTT's bio-hydrofined diesel pilot plant is undergoing a testing process, and once it proves commercially viable the company plans to build a plant at this estate.
"It's the pilot project for an environmentally friendly industrial estate, which will be a model for new industrial estates in the country," said Mr Nattachart.
Veerapong Chaiperm, governor of the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand, said the IEAT is encouraging 15 industrial estates with great potential to improve their industrial waste and wastewater treatment systems to be on par with this PTT project standard by 2015.
Thailand has 46 industrial estates, and the IEAT expects all of them to improve their waste treatment systems to meet the higher standards by 2020.
Shares of PTT closed yesterday on the Stock Exchange of Thailand at 326 baht, down one baht, in heavy trade worth 1.09 billion baht.
