H Gallery Chiang Mai presents the "Dreams And Other Thoughts: Art By Children In Refuge" exhibition, which showcases a collection of fine art prints by children and teenagers from three ethnic groups living in the border region of northern Thailand _ Shan, Lahu and Palaung.
Dreams And Other Thoughts: Art By Children In Refuge will be on show atHGallery Chiang Mai from Saturday to May 28. The gallery is500mbeyond the Tiger Kingdom inMaeRim of Chiang Mai. It's open to the public by appointment onlyonSunday,MondayandTuesday. Call085-021-5508.
Organised by the Blood Foundation, an NGO based in the province of Fang, the exhibition is the result of workshops carried out at three of their schools and led by artists Jacqueline Gribbin and Ralph Kiggell, who are based in Australia and Thailand respectively.
The Blood Foundation aims to enable minority communities to be more active in the cultural and economic life of Thailand. The printmaking techniques used in the exhibition are mainly derived from traditional Japanese woodblock methods. The domestic scenes and motifs on view belie the precarious social position of these young artists.
The artists' families have typically fled persecution in Myanmar and now occupy an ambiguous legal position in Thailand.
Gribben and Kiggell followed a workshop model originally set up in the Northern Territory of Australia where remote Aboriginal peoples tap into their local graphic traditions to create expressive prints for a wider audience.
The exhibition explores this possibility in order to draw attention to lives lived with uncertainty and the flights of thinking that can attend such a state of existence.
