BANGKOK, 27 March 2013 (NNT) รข€" The Customs Department is campaigning against corruption by urging public members and business entrepreneurs to report suspected acts of corruption.

Speaking after the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding by the Customs Department, the Customs Broker and Transportation Association, and the Thai Licensed Customs Brokers Association, Deputy Director-General of the Customs Department Yuttana Yimgarund said the agreement was made to portray a new image of the department as an organization free of bribery. Recently, the department has seized over 2 billion baht worth of contraband goods. The value of the seizure could be recorded to as high as four billion baht if including evasion of tax made through documentary frauds.

According to the deputy director-general, the Customs Department has always been focusing on transparency and fairness by bringing in an electronic system to run its work process as a way to prevent favoritism, bribery and corruption. Severe penalties have been drawn up to punish Customs officials involved in corruption. He is also encouraging members of the public to report any corruption acts if found by calling 1332 during office hours.
