SAS to end services to Thailand on April 1

Dutch Scandinavian Airline from April 1 will stop flying to Thailand, after 64 years of uninterrupted service.

Global sales director, Elisabeth Milton Hemmingsen, confirms the shutdown to standby.dk.

The internet-based news agency furthered that the Bangkok will be shut down, leading to the layoff of 30 employees.

"It is a consequence of a traffic conversion, where we instead use the aircrafts on the new route to San Francisco and two daily flights from Copenhagen in the summer. We are seeking a solution with a GSA in Thailand for sales for winter traffic," Hemmingsen said.

"We see it as something positive that we can also take advantage of the new opportunities in joint venture cooperation with Singapore Airlines between Scandinavia and Southeast Asia," she added. (http://scandasia.com/danish-airline-sas-shuts-down-in-bangkok/)

In November 1949, SAS had its first flight to Bangkok, and it lasted for almost 64 years. As plans are now, SAS will resume the route for the winter.

The decision to axe the service was first announced last year.

An aviation expert noted that the Scandinavian airline faces high labour and social costs. It is finding it increasingly difficult to compete with carriers such as Thai Airways International and the rising Gulf carriers who enjoy lower costs. Copenhagen acts as a hub for SAS' long-haul routes so a good number of SAS passengers originate from Oslo and Stockholm but THAI is now flying non-stop to Bangkok from all these three Scandinavian cities so Norwegian and Swedish customers find it more convenient not having to change planes. Carriers from the Gulf have also begun moving into Scandinavia. Emirates has begun flying out of Copenhagen while Qatar now operates out of Oslo and Stockholm and has announced its intention to serve the Finnish capital of Helsinki.
