Don't fill your cat's food and water bowls to the brim. Half way is sufficient. It prevents messes when they, or you, bump the bowl. Also, cats also tend to be a little messy when eating or drinking, so keeping the food or water level well below the brim of the bowl prevents "fallout." And since they seldom eat or drink all there is, serving smaller amounts helps to keep the food and water fresh.
