PHUKET - New direct flights from India and Malaysia are due to start, bringing hopes by officials for more visitors to the island province.
Phuket Governor Maitree Inthusut said on Tuesday the flights from Mumbai, New Delhi and Kuala Lumpur by budget airline THAI Smile will strengthen the resort island's travel faciliteis for tourists.
The sister airline of Thai Airways International will begin direct flights from Phuket to Mumbai and Kuala Lumpur on March 31, with flights to New Delhi to start on April 2.
THAI Smile will operate four return flights a week to each of the three destinations.
More than nine million local and foreign passengers visited Phuket last year, a 13 per cent rise from 2011.
