Over 1,000 flights cancelled in Spain

More than 1,000 flights will be cancelled in Spain between March 4 and 8 due to a strike by staff of the biggest airline, Iberia, several carriers announced Tuesday.

The cancelled flights include 431 Iberia flights and 750 flights by Vueling and Air Nostrum, which use Iberia ground services. Iberia Express was also expected to cancel flights.

Last week, nearly 1,300 flights were cancelled because of a five-day strike, to be followed by two others in March.

Iberia staff are protesting a decision by Iberia's owner, International Airlines Group, to cut about 3,800 jobs - nearly 20% of the total - following its 2011 merger with British Airways.

A government-appointed mediator has been trying to negotiate an agreement between Iberia management and trade unions.
