Myauk U to reopen to tourists

Myauk U will probably soon be welcoming tourists, according to Myanmar's Ministry of Hotels and Tourism.





Tucked away in northern Rakhine State, the ministry had allowed tour agencies to organise travel to Myauk U since the early months of 2008. It was temporarily closed from August 30 to September 25 last year due to the crisis in Rakhine State and again late last year. Ngapeli Beach in Thantwe Township, Waitharli old city in Myauk U Township and the Mahamuni Buddha in Kyaut Taw Township are the main tour destinations.



Yangon gets its Shangri-La



The Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Group will open Shangri-La Residence in Yangon in the third quarter of 2013. Located near Kandawgyi Lake, the property will consist of two towers with 240 serviced apartments in total. The residence will also include a swimming pool, fitness centre, shopping arcade, meeting and banquet facilities, massage and spa services, dining facilities and baby-sitting services as well as long-term room rentals. - Eleven Media



Knut at the museum



Knut the polar bear is back - on display in Berlin museum. Nearly two years after dying in the Berlin Zoo, Knut the polar bear has returned as a life-size model on display until March 15 at the Berlin Natural History Museum. This replica of the bear was made based on Knut's skeleton and covered with his pelt, which had been preserved with a special treatment. The eyes are made of glass. The museum said the model would be included in another exhibition in 2014. - DPA
