Moriya Jutanugarn enjoyed a steady start to her professional career yesterday, carding a 3-under 70 in the opening round of the Women's Australian Open at the Royal Canberra Club.
The rising Thai star, who stormed onto the LPGA Tour by winning qualifying school last year, sank three birdies and an eagle on the seventh hole but stumbled with two bogeys on holes 12 and 16 to end the day seven shots behind leader Lydia Ko.
"I was relieved after the final hole because I was nervous playing my first LPGA event as a professional player. I'm happy with my score but I was a bit disappointed with my putts," said the 18-year-old, who is joint 22nd along with defending champion Jessica Korda and American-Thai Stacy Prammana-sudh.
"I would have been five-under par but my putting let me down. It was windy on the back nine and I just couldn't putt the way I wanted to. Right after my round, I headed for the practice green.
"If I maintain my form from today, and if I can putt better, I think I will be able to hit lower scores," said Moriya, whose sister Ariya failed to make it through Tuesday's qualification round and took a flight back home to prepare for next week's Honda LPGA Thailand in Chon Buri.
"It's sad that I only got to see her and Dad for a day before they had to leave. However, we will have the whole week together next week when we play the LPGA Thailand."
Thai No 1 Pornanong Phatlum was a stroke behind Moriya on 71, which earned her a share of 34th position along with compatriot Thidapa Suwannapura. Numa Gulyanamitta was at 120th with a 74 while Nonthaya Srisawang hit a 74 for tied 144th position.
