Blast of Winter

Written By Unknown on Wednesday 27 February 2013 | 02:22

Bangkok will get a dose of Winter on March 17, at least in the form of the Vivaldi masterpiece.

The next 'Sunday 4 O'Clock at Sala Sudasiri Sobha' concert will feature harps by Judith Utley and Pinnaree Yontararak and flute by Chatchawarn Atthakijkosol.

An arrangement of the final concerto from The Four Seasons will form part of the "Harps and Flute Concert" as part of the "Sunday 4 O'Clock at Sala Sudasiri Sobha" series.

The concert, presented by the Gift of Life Foundation and Sala Sudasiri Sobha, will feature Judith Utley and Pinnaree Yontararak on harps and Chatchawarn Atthakijkosol on flute, accompanied by pianist Nat Yontararak.

The first half of the programme will feature harp solo and duo pieces such as an arrangement of Winter by D. Burton, Damase's Pastorale, Andres's Dyades, Mexican folk song La Llorona arranged by L. Zaerr, Salzedo's Behind The Barracks and Night Breeze from Short Stories In Music, and Richard Rodger's South Pacific (medley for two harps) arranged by Ray Pool.

The programme's second half will feature the lovely Concerto For Flute And Harp K 299 by Mozart and finish with Saint-Saen's Morceau de Concert in G Major Opus 154.

Utley has often performed with orchestras and ensembles, most frequently with the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra. On several occasions she has performed for members of the royal family. In 2005, Payap University became the first university in Thailand to offer harp studies, and Utley has been a faculty member of the College of Music on a part-time basis ever since.

Chatchawarn graduated from the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris and is a flute professor at Srinakharinwirot University.

Pinnaree is the youngest daughter of famous contemporary Thai artist Nat Yontararak. She started playing piano in her early years and has recorded with Nat accompanying her and performed in several mini concerts. Since last year, she started playing the harp as her second instrument. She is currently studying at the Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University.

Admission is free of charge but donations will be greatly appreciated. Proceeds will go to the Gift of Life Foundation to help blood disease patients.

Sala Sudasiri Sobha Concert Hall is on Lat Phrao Soi 41 but it is advisable to go through Lat Phrao Soi 35 and follow the signs.

The concert starts at 4pm on March 17.
