INTERVIEW
John Wong CW _ the author of Awaken Your Healing Power _ was on his death bed when he discovered five scientifically proven keys to life. The discovery helped him mend his body and combat his medical condition, which was considered incurable.
Author John Wong.
In his book, the Singaporean, a science graduate with a distinguished career in the life sciences industry, chronicles the encounter of creating a Transcendental Connection with the Source, and how that has contributed to his miraculous healing, which in turn paved the way for him to become an instrument for healing others.
Awaken Your Healing Power, available in Thai, was written with the intent to unleash a person's power from within, says Wong, who was at the peak of his career when a rare neurological disorder began to ravage his body.
Wong, who has a background in molecular genetics and biotechnology acquired in the US, said: "I was just 31, and at the top of my game when in a span of just three weeks, the paralysis in my body had become so severe that it began affecting my internal organs, rendering me physically helpless and an emotional wreck. My central nervous system had basically collapsed, and very little of me was functioning. There was no medical explanation to what was wrong with me. In Awaken Your Healing Power, I have showcased the power in all of us to heal ourselves. We have to be made aware that each of us has this power."
You were a physically strong, successful business development manager when your health took a nosedive. Share with our readers how you coped with the sudden change of events in your life.
Yes, it happened very fast. It was not like I was sick. Being so sick was devastating, to say the least. I felt I had lost my future and my ability to function as a normal human being. I could not feed and clean myself and was completely dependent on my parents to take charge.
At one stage, I had my rib cage collapse on my lungs, which resulted in shortness of breath. This was a particularly traumatic experience for me. When my health began to take a turn for the better, I had to relearn everything, including how to sit on the wheelchair.
I was truly on an emotional rollercoaster. One day I wanted to end my life, and the next day I was ready to do everything in my power to live. My family and friends, especially from my Buddhist association, continued to emotionally support me.
What was the lowest point for you?
One of the dimmest moments for me was when I began to go blind. All I could see were grey shadows. This engendered feelings of total despondency for me. This followed with not being able to eat. It took me two hours to complete my meals because every inch of my being was [in pain]. During rehab, it took me over an hour-and-a-half to defecate.
This episode in my life lasted for one year and nine months. When I returned to work, my eyesight was still bad, I didn't even know where the phone was kept on the table. My medical bills chalked up S$500,000. Luckily, my company helped shoulder the expenses.
You had a near-death experience. What was that like?
I was very much in pain that particular night when it happened. Then I recall, all of a sudden I felt no pain. The out-of-body experience felt like I was drifting really far. During the entire encounter, I seemed to be frantically swimming against the tide. Then all of a sudden, I saw a group of people chanting Buddhist prayers. It was then that I felt like I was coming back to life again after being in a state of unconsciousness. The pain had returned.
When I related this experience to a friend, he told me that Buddhist believers around the world were praying for my recovery.
You were still in recuperation when you decided to return to work.
Yes, pretty much, because going to work was therapy for me. Still, my coordination was really bad, I was like a malfunctioning robot. When I met clients at a location I wasn't familiar with, I used to go a day ahead to accustom myself to the area.
Eight years have elapsed since, and my ability to control my bodily functions has improved by leaps and bounds. However, I still have problems going down staircases. I have to walk slowly _ it's as if certain files in my brain have been deleted, and I have to relearn them.
When I first returned to work, I was so desperate to be normal. I felt I could not let anyone know I was sick, so I did everything in my capacity to show everything was well. Once when I was in the US, I paid a beggar a dollar to help me cross the street.
During what stage of your recovery did you realise you had the power in you to heal yourself?
This realisation never comes easily and it's often not static. I had my doubts. Having to go through the physical pain and uncertainty of what was actually wrong with me on a day-in, day-out basis had taken a toll on my emotions.
So to answer your question, I would say I went through a process which enabled me to harness my faith and muster my courage daily to realise I had the power in me to heal myself.
It's a process that calls on you to take three steps forward and two steps back. I wish to tell people that all it takes is persistent and profound faith.
Besides the holistic understanding of water, nutrition, environment, energetics and one's mental state that have a profound impact on an individual's health, I also discovered during the later stages of my recovery that there is a deeper aspect to each of these areas. These are discreetly revealed in my book, which is backed by scientific findings and discussions.
Is Awaken Your Healing Power a stepping stone to something greater that you have planned for yourself?
I am not sure. I just hope that this book can help people to tap into their inner self to live a victorious life. The feedback I've received from different parts of the world is encouraging because this little book has inspired readers to heal or trigger a positive shift within their lives. Honestly, for me, that is already the greatest reward.
My philosophy is to go with the flow, with no expectations. My greatest aspiration is that my book will continue to encourage and help people in need.
