BANGKOK, 15 January 2013 (NNT) â€" The Royal Irrigation Department has conceded that the eastern region of Thailand is now experiencing the problem of water shortage.

Mr. Lertviroj Kowattana, Director-General of the Royal Irrigation Department, said that farmers in the eastern part of Thailand are now facing the problem of falling water supply.

He stated that all eight reservoirs in the region have not contained adequate water supply during last year’s rainy season.

The Royal Irrigation Department chief explained that the problem was caused by less rainfall towards the end of the season, while the stored supply had to be allocated for any use other than agricultural purposes.

Mr. Lertviroj stated that the Royal Irrigation Department will not be diverting water to help the farming sector during the drought season unless there is excess supply stored behind any reservoir.
