The Cabinet, conducting a special meeting in Uttaradit on Monday, held a minute of silence in remembrance of Chumpol Silapaarcha, tourism and sports minister, who passed away earlier in the morning.
Hospitalised for heart disease after collapsing while working in the Government House in the middle of December, the 72yearold veteran politician served in many cabinets including that of Abhisit Vejjajiva. He was a younger brother of former prime minister Banharn Silapaarcha and defactor leader of the Chat Thai Pattana Party,
Government spokesman Dr Tossaphon Sereerak told reporters in Uttaradit that cabinet members were shocked to learn of Chumpol's death. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra then asked the cabinet to stand up and hold a minute of silence in remembrance of Chumpol.
PM's Secretary General Suranund Vejjajiva said Yingluck also telephoned Banharn to express condolences for his loss. Yingluck will join the royal bathing rite at Thepsirin Temple on Tuesday.
Banharn told reporters that he was very sad at Chumpol's death as he and Chumpol had worked in Chat Pattana Party for long time and with the best efforts for the party.
"On December 17 last year, Chumpol collapsed at the Government House and his heart stopped beating for 45 minutes before the doctors could resuscitate him. His condition had appeared to improve slightly until the past two days but he finally drew his last breath this morning," he said.
Doctors identified the cause of death as heart failure, Banharn said.
He said he has in mind the new minister of sports and tourism, a position that comes under the quota of the Chat Thai Pattana Party.
Meanwhile Democrat spokesman Chawanon Indharakomalsut said Democrat Party wished to express condolences to the Silapaarcha family on their bereavement.
He described Chumpol as a capable and qualified member of the Chat Thai and Chat Thai Pattana parties who had worked for the benefits of the country for long time.
