Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO) presents "Prokofiev Shostakovich", a fitting prelude to the festive season featuring works of two of the 20th century's major composers.

Pianist Poom Prommachart and conductor Claude Villaret will perform at the 'Prokofiev Shostakovich' concert at Mahidol University's College of Music on Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 4pm.

Scheduled for Friday at 7pm and on Saturday at 4pm at the auditorium of Mahidol University's College of Music, Salaya campus, the concert is sure to get the audience in the mood, for it features Claude Villaret as guest and principal conductor alongside emerging local pianist Poom Prommachart.

Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No.2 In G Minor, Opus 16 is paired with Shostakovich's Symphony No.10 In E Minor, Opus 93.

Labelled "a young Ashkenazy" by critics comparing him to the famed Russian-Icelandic conductor and pianist, Poom graduated with honours in music. He is a Hopkinson gold medallist at the Royal College of Music, London, where he is pursuing a master's degree under world-renowned Russian pianist Prof Dina Parakhina. Poom is there on scholarship courtesy of Thanpuying Tasna-Valaya Sorasongkram. Poom won first prize at Thailand International Piano Competition last year when he performed Beethoven Emperor Concerto with the TPO under the baton of Gudni Emilsson.

Tickets cost 300 and 500 baht (100 baht for students). Call 02-800-2525_34 ext 153/4. There's a Salaya Link shuttle bus service from Wong Wian Yai BTS station to the university. For schedule, visit www.music.mahidol.ac.th/salayalink.
