Korkaew's bail rejected

The Criminal Court yesterday rejected Pheu Thai MP and red-shirt leader Korkaew Pikulthong's request for bail even though his reason was that he needed to attend His Majesty's birthday celebrations.

The court said the reason was not justified and that there was no guarantee he would not violate the bail conditions again.

Korkaew had his lawyer Jessada Chandee submit the bail request at 11am by posting assets worth Bt600,000 as a guarantee. His bail was revoked on November 30 on grounds that he had directed intimidating comments at Constitution Court judges in a press conference. Korkaew is among the 24 suspects facing terrorism charges in relation to the 2010 political violence.

In the bail application, Korkaew told the court that as an MP, he had to join a ceremony wishing His Majesty well today. He said the PM had also invited him to attend a garden party in honour of the King on Friday. The MP also reminded the court that as a member of the House committee on economic development, he would need to attend weekly meetings as well as fly to Europe from Saturday to December 14 as a member of the panel.

In the request, Korkaew said he never intended to cause disturbance and that he even told members of the red-shirt movement to cancel all activities that might lead to trouble. He said that red-shirt supporters saw him as a peaceful person, adding that detaining him would not bode well for the country. He also reminded the court that he needs to take care of his wife and two children.
