World's best triathletes target Phuket Ironman 70.3

Some of the world's toughest triathletes are in Thailand for the Ironman 70.3 Laguna Phuket this Sunday.

The punishing race takes place at Laguna Phuket Resort and will be the culmination of World Triathlon's new Asia-Pacific Ironman 70.3 event series.

Switzerland's Ruedi Wild and Czech Republic's Radka Vodickova, who are fresh from winning the men's and women's titles at the Laguna Phuket Triathlon last Sunday, are among the favourites for one of the world's most testing single-day endurance races, consisting of a 1.9 kilometre swim, 90.9km bike and 21.1km run, for a total distance of 112.9km.

American Chris Lieto, third place at Ironman 70.3 Hawaii, Italian Massimo Cigana, the winner of this year's Ironman 70.3 Mergozzo in Italy, and Swede Frederik Croneborg, who was third in Ironman 70.3 Japan, have confirmed their participation.

The Laguna Phuket race will use the Laguna Phuket Triathlon's trademark swim course of a section in the Andaman Sea, a beach run-over and a section in the lagoon. The bike course will be challenging and spectacular with hilly sections and winding rural roads through rubber plantations and villages. The two-loop flat run will include Resort roads, paved paths and grass golf-course sections.

Over the years, this race has attracted top triathlon stars such as Mark Allen, Paula Newby-Fraser, Craig Alexander and Samantha McGlone, who have routinely listed Laguna Phuket as a favourite race.

This year, two intrepid endurance reality TV stars are making Ironman 70.3 Laguna Phuket the final leg of their global adventure challenge. Simon Donato and Paul "Turbo" Trebilcock will be filmed competing in Ironman 70.3 Laguna Phuket as the last of eight challenges for the 10 episode TV series "Boundless".
