Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has cancelled all appointments for today and follows the situation at her residence in Bangkok's Soi Yothinpattana 3, reports said.
Border patrol and Lat Phrao station police were deployed around area of the premier's house to provide security.
An army of reporters was standing by in front of her residence after it was reported that the protesters plans to march to her house.
The Pitak Siam group, led by retired Gen Boonlert Kaewprasit, or Seh Ai, is rallying against the Pheu Thai-led government at the Royal Plaza.
Police this morning fired tear gas at the protesters at Makawan bridge after they tried to break through barricades in an attempt to go into a restricted area.
A number of protesters were arrested.
Pol Maj Gen Piya Uthayo, spokesman of the Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO), insisted that the use of tear gas this morning is in line with international standards on mob control.
He said the protesters had cut off barbed wires and tried to storm through police line, using a six-wheel truck to push back police, injuring five police, 2 seriously.
National police chief and CAPO director Pol Gen Aul Saengsingkaew had ordered police to be patient even though the protester tried to instigate violent confrontation, he added.
