Thai web forums are warning people with Apple IDs to beware of websites offering free virtual stickers for LINE, a widely popular Japanese instant messaging application.
Posters on popular web boards such as Panthip warn that a number of websites are offering free stickers for LINE, promoting themselves on various Thai weblogs and online forums.
The posters warn that these are phishing websites intending to steal users' Apple ID information.
The phishing sites have a similar appearance to the official Apple ID website https://appleid.apple.com and lure visitors into filling in their usernames, passwords and credit card information.
Once they have the information, these online fraudsters change the passwords of their victims' Apple ID accounts and then do whatever they want with them.
One victim claimed that she was billed more than 60,000 baht for online purchases she never made.
Some of the examples of these sites' URL addresses people are being warning to stay away from include http://www.apples.thmy.com, http://apples.ueuo.com/signin.php and http://www.apples.thmy.com. However they are changing constantly and continue luring in new victims.
Internet users were advised that the authentic Apple ID website always has a Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (Https) prefix.
The best defence against these phishing sites is to keep in mind that if any online deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Also always make online purchases only from trustworthy sites.
