Myanmar has denied the existence of a plot to assassinate former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra during his planned visit to the border town of Tachilek, the online edition of the Wall Street Journal on November 6.

The report quoted Pol Maj Min Kyaw Thu in Nay Pyi Taw as saying "it has nothing to do with Mr Thaksin. There is absolutely no plot to assassinate Mr Thaksin".

Thaksin has called off his trip to Tachilek, originally scheduled for tomorrow and Saturday, citing warnings from Thai and Myanmar security authorities that there was a plot to assassinate him. However, his plan to visit Nay Pyi Taw to meet Myanmar president Thein Sein is still on.

News about the claimed plot was exaggerated by Thaksin's son, Panthongtae, who wrote about it on his Facebook page, linking the plot to a seizure of weapons in the areas recently.

Maj Min Kyaw Thu was quoted by the Journal as saying the case was drugs-related and was under investigation.
