A 6.8-magnitude earthquake shook northern Myanmar Sunday, killing at least four people and injuring more than 20 in Shwebo district, officials said.

The quake that rattled buildings as far away as Bangkok was centred about 117 kilometres north of Mandalay, Myanmar's second most-populous city, and about 72 kilometres north of Shwebo township, according to US Geological Survey (USGS) data and Myanmar meteorological officials.

USGS at first registered the quake at 6.6 magnitude but later upgraded it to 6.8 on the Richter scale.

The earthquake caused the partial collapse of the Yadana Thin-ga Bridge linking Singdu township in the Mandalay region to Shwebo in Sagaing district, killing one man who was working on the bridge and throwing four others into the river, police said.

A woman was also killed as the bridge collapsed. Two other civilians were crushed to death by falling walls, Shwebo police said.

At least 21 people were injured in Shwebo, where buildings and pagodas suffered damage, said officials.

Several buildings suffered minor damage in Mandalay, including the25-storey Zay-cho Building that closed Sunday.

"People are in a panic because they fear there will be another quake," said Thin Thin, a Mandalay shop keeper. "I am 45 and I have never experienced such a powerful quake before," she said.

There were no reports of tourists injured in Mandalay, a popular destination for Western travelers.

"All our guests are safe," said a spokesman for the Sedona Hotel in Mandalay. "There is no damage whatsoever." The manager at Mandalay Hill Resort said: "Of course we felt it, but all is fine here." The quake struck at 7:42 am (0112 GMT).

The epicentre was about 450 kilometres west of Mae Hong Son, on the Thai-Myanmar border, the Thai Meteorological Department reported. There were no reports of damage in Thailand.

Myanmar sits on fault lines where the India and Eurasia tectonic plates meet.
