Kim Dotcom announces new file-sharing website

Wellington - Kim Dotcom, the German-born millionaire who is wanted in the United States for internet piracy, has announced a new file-sharing website in New Zealand where he is out on bail awaiting an extradition hearing, news reports said Friday.

The founder of Megaupload is using the small West African country Gabon for his new web address, www.me.ga, to distance it from the US where the FBI accuses him of movie and music copyright breaches, racketeering and money laundering.

A web announcement depicted a click-on button saying, "On January 19th, this button will change the world." The date is the anniversary of the arrest of Dotcom and three colleagues at his rented mansion in Auckland by New Zealand police acting on behalf of the FBI, which wants him extradited to face trial in the US. A hearing has been scheduled for March.

His web announcement said: "In the past, securely storing and transferring confidential information required the installation of dedicated software. The new Mega encrypts and decrypts your data transparently in your browser, on the fly. Before, we operated only a handful of storage nodes located in expensive premium data centres.

"Now, thanks to encryption, we can connect a large number of hosting partners around the world without worrying about privacy breaches. Our servers will be closer to our customers. This will result in faster data transfers. You hold the keys to what you store in the cloud, not us."//DPA
