An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale shook northern Myanmar Sunday, causing some damage but with no immediate reports of casualties, officials said.
The quake that rattled buildings as far away as Bangkok was centred about 117 kilometres north of Mandalay, Myanmar's second most-populous city, and about 72 kilometres north of Shwebo township, according to US Geological Survey data and Myanmar officials.
"People are in a panic because they fear there will be another quake," said Thin Thin, a Mandalay shop keeper. "I am 45 years old and I have never experienced such a powerful quake before," she said.
In Mandalay several buildings suffered damage, including the 25-storey Zay-cho Building that closed Sunday.
"We haven't heard of any casualties or injuries yet," said anofficial in the capital Naypyitaw, 350 kilometres north of Yangon, where the quake was felt at 7:42 am (01:12 GMT).
The epicentre was about 450 kilometres west of Mae Hong Son, on the Thai-Myanmar border, the Thai Meteorological Department reported.
There were no damage reports in Thailand. Myanmar sits on fault lines where the India and Eurasia tectonic plates meet.
