Bangkok voted Asia's top city

Bangkok has been voted top city in Asia and ranks fourth in the Top Cities in the World by Readers' Choice Awards 2012 of Conde Nast Travelers magazine.


Results were based on online votes of 46,476 respondents who were asked to rate the world's most celebrated cities, islands, hotels and resorts, cruise ships and airlines based on various factors including ambience, friendliness, restaurants, culture and shopping.


Bangkok had the highest score for the Top City in Asia followed by Hong Kong, Kyoto, Singapore, Chiang Mai, Ubud, Tokyo, Hoi An, Shanghai and Luang Prabang.


Phuket ranked in the second position among the Top 10 Islands in Asia category behind this year's winner Bali, which has the highest score for its scenery and friendliness, while Koh Samui was ranked fifth.


For the Top Cities in the World, the winner surprisingly is Charleston in South Carolina followed by Cape Town, Florence, Bangkok, Vancouver, Sydney, Beirut, San Miguel de Allende in Mexico, Buenos Aires and Gustavia which is the capital of St Barts Island.

Mini city guides


Travel Easy Asia has introduced mini bilingual city guides for visitors to enjoy exploring Bangkok and Chiang Mai.


According to the company's managing director Kristen Rossi, the guides offer "local", "not to miss" city experiences through a set of 50 business card-sized waterproof cards for each town.


The content is comprised of four sections: See, Say, Go and Walk with brief information and also QR codes to obtain more information of each place online. The guides are available in both Thai and English.


The company also plans to introduce guides for other cities including Pattaya, Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

Qatar Airways adds new routes


Qatar Airways has introduced direct flights from Doha to Yangon and plans to launch another direct flight to Phnom Penh next February.


Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker said Yangon was its ninth new destination this year and the first Asian launch in 2012. "There has never been a better time to expand into Myanmar _ a country blessed with rich natural resources, and proximity to some of the world's most dynamic economies."


Qatar Airways is operating thrice weekly non-stop flights with Airbus 319 aircraft offering eight seats in Business and 102 in Economy class.


For the Doha-Phnom Penh route, the airline will operate with an Airbus A330 featuring a two-class configuration of 248 seats in Economy and 36 in Business. The flights will operate via Ho Chi Minh City. Phnom Penh will be its latest destination in Southeast Asia including Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Bali, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, Hanoi, Singapore, Manila, Phuket and Yangon.


Hotels update


- The Kasemkij Company has opened Classic Kameo Hotel and Serviced Apartments in Rayong.


Located on Ratbumrung Road in Rayong, the hotel features 198 rooms starting from a 33m2 studio to two 122m2 bedroom suites.

- The Accor Siam to Siem Reap Cycling event has raised over US$150,000 (about 4.5 million baht) for children's education in Cambodia.


Over 40 bikers recently joined Accor's three-day bicycle challenge from Bangkok to Siem Reap.


The proceed will be donated to the hotel's school established by Accor's co-founder Paul Dubrule in 2002 after he rode his bike for 15,000km from Paris to Siem Reap to open his personal project, formally called the Ecole d' Hotellerie et de Tourisme Paul Dubrule in Siem Reap.


His objective is to educate and train young Cambodians to be able to find a career in the hospitality industry. More than 1,200 students have graduated from the school since 2002.


This year's fund will support an expected 230 students with educational expenses to graduate from a certificate programme.
