Bangkok Election Commission chairman Thaweesak Tuchinda said Thursday he would invite the media to cover "big news" next Wednesday regarding the Bangkok governor election.
He said his agency would summon individuals to testify over complaints they had made related to the election. He refused to elaborate.
He also confirmed his agency had forwarded the results of probes into two cases against Bangkok governor-elect Sukhumbhand Paribatra to the national Election Committee (EC), which would have the final say on the matter.
Meanwhile, Sukhumbhand Thursday reported to the Department of Special Investigation to face charges he violated the Political Parties Act with his financial contribution to the Democrat Party five years ago.
Sukhumbhand insisted that his donation of Bt100,000 from his salary in five transactions was not unlawful as he had reported the donations to the EC, which did not find he had committed any wrongdoing.
Sukhumbhand said the DSI deemed the EC had been negligent in the matter, which had led to the charges against him.
Speaking to the media after reporting to Pol Colonel Nirand Adulsak, commander of the Special Criminal Cases Division 1, Sukhumbhand said Article 52 of the Political Parties Act was aimed at preventing money laundering, but his donations to the Democrats were transparent, so he and other Democrats were innocent of the charges.
Nirand said Sukhumbhand, Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva and 46 other Democrat MPs had technically violated Article 57 because the article required that donations be made as account-payee cheques, not as direct transfers from bank accounts.
Nirand said he would summon Abhisit and the 46 other Democrat MPs to hear the charge after the current parliamentary session expires on April 20.
Nirand said the DSI received complaints against the Democrats on September 4, 2012, but it had no authority to launch an investigation until the DSI board voted on October 10 to proceed with the investigation.
