BANGKOK, 10 FEBRUARY 2013 (NNT) â€" Academics have suggested the government to timely seek conclusion on the constitutional amendment in order for the country to move on under the principles of democracy

Distinguished academics attended a seminar titled “2007 Constitution: Time to Decide”, which was organized by the Institute of Democratization Studies (IDS) to discuss opinions on the direction of Thailand’s 2007 charter amendment.

IDS chairman Jaturon Chaisang delivered opening remarks, in which he stated that a conclusion on the constitutional amendment must urgently be drawn to allow the country to move forward under the democratic rules.

Independent academic Likhit Theeravekin stated that an amendment is needed for the 2007 Constitution due to the obscure nature of its origin while calling for the disbandment of the Assets Examination Committee, which was established during the military coup.

Former dean of the Faculty of Political Science at Chulalongkorn University Charas Suwanmala believes that the revision of 2007 charter will not lead to crisis since it contains many flaws.

However, he noted that an amendment should be cautiously considered for each, without haste.

Meanwhile, public law lecturer at Thammasat University Worajate Pakhirat said that the entire Constitution should be amended and suggested the government to proceed with either the third reading of the charter rewrite bill or hold a public referendum.
