A 28-year-old engineer turned sailor, Patinyakorn "Ging" Buranrom represented Thailand in the recent Phuket King's Cup Regatta under his vessel Sansiri. He was last year's runner-up at the same event and also the runner-up at Phang Nga Bay Regatta in February.

WHEN DID YOU START SAILING?

About three or four years ago while working in Phuket, I became friends with a boat owner. He let me sail his boat, which I really enjoyed. From there I decided to enter a few competitions and the feedback was good so I continued.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM INTERNATIONAL COMPETITORS?

I have learned a lot from my opponents who have been sailing for longer than me. I have picked up on how they read the wind and tide, their teamwork and communication.

DO YOU NEED ANY SPECIAL SKILLS TO SAIL?

Nothing too specific but you have to be fit and not susceptible to seasickness. Also, you must be able to handle yourself outdoors because you will spend a lot of time in the sun and sea.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO SAIL?

Phuket, since it is one of the centers of sailing in Asia and the climate is suitable. It has a lot of natural features so if you want somewhere peaceful, you can sail to the many islands in the area. Or you can just sail around and park the boat in front of the restaurants if you want to grab a bite.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT SAILING?

It allows you to spend a lot of time with yourself and nature so you can reflect on things. I have learned a lot about perseverance and precision from time spent alone.

HAVE YOU EVER EXPERIENCED ANYTHING UNEXPECTED WHEN OUT AT SEA?

Nothing really dramatic, but sometimes there might be dolphins or whales that come and swim next to the boat. There might also be a big rainbow if I am lucky.

WHAT ON-LAND ACTIVITIES DO YOU ENJOY?

Sports and travelling.

HOW CAN SAILING BECOME MORE MAINSTREAM IN THAILAND?

I have heard many people express an interest in sailing but they lack access. Sailing is essentially a foreign sport and when I first started, most fellow sailors were foreigners. It also means that equipment, including boats, is very expensive. Some equipment is made in Thailand so the prices have come down, but only a bit. My friends and I set up the Thai Yacht Club on Facebook

[search "Thai Yacht Club" on Facebook] to encourage and remove some of the barriers so more people can enjoy sailing.
